CAT. 0007 About

Keepers of your words.

Lexarii is a library for the books you own: catalogued with care, read in comfort, and searchable down to the sentence, without selling you anything else or watching what you read.

Whence the name?

Lexarii (lex-AR-ee-ee), n. pl.

lex- (as in lexicon, from Greek léxis, “word”) + Latin -arii, “an order of those devoted to a craft”

A coined Latin word meaning “the keepers of words.” In Latin, the ending -arius names a person devoted to a craft, and -arii names an order of them. Lexarii are the keepers of words: archivists who catalogue every volume, preserve every note, and make sure nothing worth reading is ever lost. Lexarii brings that devotion to your own shelves.

What do the keepers hold to?

What we hold to.

Lexarii began as free software for people who keep their own libraries, and it still is. The hosted edition exists so that you do not need a server to have one.

It is independent, and paid for by the people who use it rather than by advertising. It is made by Postal Studios, who also make JobQuisitor. Who runs it, formally, is in the legal notice.

  • Your files are never altered. What Lexarii derives from a book is kept beside it, never written into it.
  • Publisher metadata beats a guess. A title or subject a model suggests only fills a gap or waits for review, and always says where it came from. (On lexarii.com, we do the reviewing.)
  • Answers cite their sources, or say that your library does not contain one.
  • The model is optional. Without it, the library and the reader still work completely.
  • Free software at heart. The code is public under the AGPL, and the hosted service runs on it.
